Course Overview

The integumentary system, our skin, is the body’s largest organ and its first line of defense against bacteria, injury, and sunlight. Our skin has three layers that include the epidermis or outermost layer, the dermis, which is right under the epidermis, and the hypodermis which lies beneath the dermis and is also known as the subcutaneous layer. Each layer has many essential functions. In this module you will:

• Learn about and identify the different layers and functions of the skin
• Understand the five main types of wounds that can compromise the skin’s defenses
• Identify changes of the skin that must be reported to a supervisor
• Learn how to properly care for the skin in “at risk” areas
• Identify other common disease conditions associated with the integumentary system
